IPM C.A.R.E.S. about our schools!
A Well-designed School Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program is:
Comprehensive, Adaptable, Responsible, Economical, and Sustainable.
The program should use all effective tools to manage pests, be able to be modified
to address any pest situation, it should do the least harm to people and the environment
, it should be economical sound and the program should reduce pest problems over the
long-term. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles can be applied to virtually
every aspect of our lives, including our schools.
Children are more sensitive to pesticide exposure than adults because they are smaller,
have less-developed immune systems and are greater risk for exposure to pesticides
from crawling, exploring, or other hand-to-mouth activities. Since children spend
so much of their day at school, IPM provides a way to create a safer learning environment
that reduces pests AND children's exposure to pesticides.
IPM programs emphasize PREVENTION, INSPECTION and the use of a wide variety of NON-CHEMICAL
tools BEFORE pesticide applications are ever considered.
