We are testing two different versions of our Co-Parenting for Resilience program: The in-person and the online versions.

If you are separating or divorcing from you partner and the two of you have a child together who is under the age of 18, Oklahoma law requires you to attend a 4-hour divorce education class before you are awarded custody of your child, and the divorce is finalized.

Why is this Needed?

No matter how agreeable and cooperative some parents may be, divorce or parental separation is an emotionally charged process that often has unintended consequences, especially for children. Years of research shows that children who experience their parents’ separation are more likely than other children to struggle with depression, anxiety, school attendance and grades, delinquency, drug use, teen pregnancy, and other negative outcomes.

Some children fear losing one or both of their parents and have a hard time switching between their parents' homes. Research also suggests that a brief four-hour class can help parents learn which behaviors are harmful and should be avoided and other things they can do to help their children adjust and thrive.

Co-Parenting for Resilience

The Co-parenting for Resilience in-person and online programs are designed to teach divorcing and separating parents how to handle their own emotions better and to keep their children from being hurt. They also offer many positive tips on parenting in general to help promote a healthy, happy relationship between the parent and child. Fully 98% of people who take the class said that they gained important information and would recommend the class to a friend.

To make sure that both our in-person and online programs are genuinely helping parents and their children, researchers at OSU are conducting a study that compares the Co-Parenting for Resilience in-person and online courses to each other and to a third group that doesn’t receive either version (i.e., a control group).

Study Overview

We are asking divorcing or separating parents who have a biological child between the ages of 4-10 to consider signing up for our study. Your participation will help us learn how to improve our classes so that parents just like you can have a better relationship with their children.

As a way of saying thank you for helping us, we will waive your class fee (a value of $35 to $65 depending on the class) and give you two opportunities to earn some extra cash (up to $40) as well!
