Bulk Density Estimates with Different Soil Sampling Probes, Soil Textures and Soil Moisture Conditions

By Sumit Sharma, Jason Warren, Tyson Ochsner and Cole Diggins. Soil Bulk Density is an important soil physical property used to estimate mineral stocks such as organic carbon and plant nutrients in the soil. Bulk Density is also used in determining the compaction of the soil. Bulk Density is dynamic in nature and can vary in values in the same field under different sampling conditions. These variations in bulk density can also arise due to different sampling equipment and soil conditions during sampling. This fact sheet discusses the impact of different-sized probes on the bulk density estimates and the impact of texture and soil moisture conditions on bulk density estimates. This fact sheet is the second in a series on bulk density; the first fact sheet in the series, titled "Basics of Bulk Density," has been published.
