Allspice or Sweetshrub
Calycanthus
Sweetshrub or allspice is a deciduous native shrub that can reach 6 to 12’ high with
equal or slightly greater spread. Calycanthus floridus, commonly called Carolina Allspice
or Common Sweetshrub, is native to the southeast. It is found growing in shady woodland
areas and along stream banks. Its common name of Sweetshrub comes from the showy fragrant
spring flowers often described as having a pineapple, strawberry, and banana aroma.
Flowers are generally brownish to reddish-brown, but varieties come in red to yellow
and white flowers.
Sweetshrubs are tolerant of damage by deer and clay soils. Use it as a specimen, in
a shrub border, naturalized area or in a patio planting where its sweet floral fragrance
can be enjoyed. Sweetshrub can also be used in a shrub border or the smaller forms
as a foundation planting. Once you see it in flower, you'll understand why it is a
showstopper!
