The horn fly project has been an on going project that is conducted on an annual basis to see how different insecticidal ear tags perform from year to year. The following information is from the summer of 2013.

Project Details

This year we had two different locations that were tagged, Valliant OK and Stillwater OK. Fly counts are taken weekly from five groups of twenty cattle each. Three groups were treated with different insecticidal ear tags and one control group in Valliant OK. Stillwater had five different treated groups and one control group.

Ideal Rotation of Insecticidal Products for Horn Fly Control

The ideal rotation of products is based on the chemical class of the product. Currently all insecticides used for horn fly control fall in three categories: Pyrethriod, Organophosphate, or Macrocyclic Lactone.

The chemical class needs to be rotated every time the animals are treated. This could be a yearly rotation with insecticidal ear tags or a monthly rotation of sprays or pour-ons or any monthly combination.
