4-H Clubs
4‑H empowers young people to lead for a lifetime. 4‑H programs are grounded in the
belief that kids learn best by doing. Kids complete hands-on projects in areas like
science, health, agriculture and civic engagement, in a positive environment where
they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership
roles. Kids can concentrate on one focus area or they can try a variety of programs
throughout their 4‑H experience.
4‑H programs are available through local 4‑H Community Clubs, 4‑H Project Clubs and
a variety of workshops and day camps. With the support of adult mentors, youth select
from a menu of hands-on project ideas to complete. 4‑H programs are available for
children ages 8-18. 4‑H Cloverbud programs are available for children ages 5-7.
4-H Community Clubs
A 4-H Community club is a group of young people and adults who meet regularly for fun and learning. Clubs are usually made up of families from a community and often formed around schools, churches or community centers. Most clubs hold monthly meetings attended by members and their parents. Club members elect officers who lead the group and the meetings. An adult club leader advises the officers. The meetings usually last less than two hours. The time is equally divided among club business, recreation and educational programs. A well-organized 4-H club meeting provides opportunities for every member to be involved.

In McClain County we believe youth growth and development is the primary goal of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Introducing safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment opens valuable vocational and life long recreational education.
About two-thirds of homes in the U.S. have firearms. We believe exposing youth to safe and responsible handling of firearms is vital to preventing accidents.
Each discipline teaches safety, concentration, self-discipline, self-confidence, goal-setting, decision making and courtesy as youth learn basic skills and build toward more advanced activities. Both competitive and cooperative skills are included. Participants are exposed to local policies, regulations, laws, and ethical behavior through repeat demonstrations and personal practice.
All 4-H’ers that are 9 years old are invited to attend the Archery and Air Rifle practices and be a part of the club. However, to compete in contests, 4-H'ers must be 9 years old as of September 1, 2019. 4-H’ers must be at least 12 years old as of September 1, 2019, to shoot Air Pistol. To participate in contests in any discipline, 4-H'ers must have been enrolled for 30 days and certified in the discipline by the Coach.
