Becoming a Master Gardener

The Master Gardener (MG) program is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping the community with horticulture issues, through the Cooperative Extension Service. The Training Course is designed to provide education and technical training to persons interested in learning about plants and how they grow. In addition, MG trainees have an interest in joining the volunteer group – the Logan County Master Gardener Association. Requirements include:

  • Completing the Extension Master Gardener certification training, which consists of approximately 60 hours of classroom instruction from OSU State and County Horticulture Specialists.
  • The program fee is $100, nonrefundable, which covers the cost of learning materials and resources which enrollees keep.

After completing the Master Gardener training program and passing the final exam, they will begin a volunteer internship. Interns must complete 40 hours of service. To maintain certification annually, Master Gardeners are asked to give back 20 hours of volunteer service and 20 hours of continued education. They must also attend at least one general meeting during the year.  Service hours are supervised by the Logan County OSU Extension Office.

Logan County Master Gardeners

The Logan County Master Gardener Association (LCMGA) is a volunteer organization under the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service. The LCMGA is comprised of individuals who have completed the Master Gardener training program and have become certified.

The Logan County Master Gardeners meet the second Tuesday each month at the Extension Office Education Building. Following the business meeting, there is usually an educational segment and many times a planned activity which often includes tours of garden sites.

Being a Member

Members have the opportunity to serve and participate in specific committees based on their individual interests. Committee chairpersons meet with the elected officers – Executive Board – each month in preparation for the upcoming general meeting.

LCMGA sponsors two fundraising activities each year which are open to the public. The Plant Sale is held in May and the Garage Sale is held in October. LCMGA members enjoy garden and vendor tours. Members help with maintenance of community and project gardens and help with children’s nature programs. They also help the Extension Office as needed, and with advertising, preparing, and participating in gardening workshops, Master Gardener Classes and the Logan County Fair.
