Enjoy the flavors of the season while meeting health goals

The sights, sounds, smells and flavors of the holidays are a constant this time of year. ‘Tis the season when tables are laden with special, calorie-dense holiday treats, making it a bit more difficult to make food healthy choices.

It’s important to eat smart all year long, but allowing a few tasty treats here and there during the holiday season won’t derail a healthy eating plan, said Janice Hermann, Oklahoma State University Extension nutrition specialist.

“The holiday season is a time to celebrate, and we often do that with special meals and festive parties with family and friends,” Hermann said. “It’s OK to indulge some here and there, but the important thing to keep in mind is to consistently make healthy choices throughout the season. Portion control must be top of mind.”

A person should stick to a regular eating plan and physical activities in between holiday get-togethers.

Hermann said partygoers don’t need to starve themselves on the day of a holiday party as a trade-off for enjoying some less-than-healthy options.

“This will likely lead to over-indulging when it’s party time. Instead, plan your calorie intake and eat lighter meals throughout the day. Have a sensible snack before leaving the house to help curb your appetite at the party,” she said. “If the party is potluck, bring your favorite healthy dish to ensure there’s at least one option that won’t bust your calorie budget.”

Take time to mingle with other party guests before heading for the buffet table. When it’s time to eat, look over all options before making selections. Try to fill the plate with healthier choices first, including proteins, vegetables and whole grains, then fill in with some indulgent options. Limit sugary beverages and alcohol as they can contribute to excess calorie intake.

Hermann suggests eating slowly and savoring the flavors and textures of special holiday treats. If the dessert options are too numerous to choose just one, share a couple of treats with a friend.

“The holiday season is a special time of year, and we want to enjoy particular holiday food favorites,” she said. “Making healthier choices throughout the holiday season helps ensure we don’t tip the scale too far in one direction.”
