This week on SUNUP:
- Kurtis Hair packs his bags and heads to Scotland to follow a group of OSU students studying abroad and learning about agriculture in the UK.
- We feature another report from the Scotland study abroad trip, where Kurtis learns at the Royal Highland Show that we’re not the only country that likes to showcase its agriculture.
- Karl Rich, OSU international agricultural programs director, talks with SUNUP host Lyndall Stout about how study abroad programs work and the value they provide in rounding out a student’s college education.
- Bruce Whitelaw, director of the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, sits
down with Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock marketing specialist, for a conversation about the genetic
research that led to the development of Dolly the sheep.
Dan Stein, OSU associate professor of animal breeding and reproduction, discusses the advancements in animal science genetics that came after the introduction of Dolly the sheep. - Mark Johnson, OSU Extension beef cattle breeding specialist, explains CRISPR gene editing technology and how it’s used to improve livestock disease resistance, heat tolerance and other factors.
- Finally, Kurtis Hair wraps us coverage from Scotland with a farm visit hosted by Alastair Macrae, chair of animal health/production and dairy herd manager at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Macrae offers insight on a wide range of topics, including managing cattle and pasture in the wet Scottish environment, forage options, grazing rotations and cross-breeding with dairy cattle.
