Kay County Corn, Summer Crop Update & Calf Carcass Weights

Sunday, August 3, 2025

This week on SUNUP:

  • SUNUP heads to Kay County and meets with producer Chad Otto to get a look at his corn crop and see how it’s holding up with the extreme heat.
  • MacKinzie Overman, Kay County OSU Extension director and agriculture educator, says there are a few wheat fields left to be cut in Kay County due to the excessive rainfall. She also says producers need to be scouting for armyworms in their soybean fields.
  • Josh Lofton, OSU Extension cropping systems specialist, gives an overall summer crop update, and like the soybean fields, insect pressure is rising in corn and sorghum fields.
  • In the Mesonet Weather Report, Emma White, OSU Extension agricultural meteorologist, predicts a break in the high temperatures. State climatologist Gary McManus says drought is popping back up in southwest Oklahoma.
  • Viewers are invited to the OSU Extension Women in Agriculture conference on Aug. 7 in Edmond.
  • Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock marketing specialist, covers the latest USDA Cattle on Feed and Cattle Inventory reports. Dr. Peel says even with high beef prices, beef consumption is not dropping off.
  • Finally, Mark Johnson, OSU Extension beef cattle breeding specialist, explains the expected beef yield from a butchered calf.
