Simple Techniques Can Extend The Gardening Season
Sunday, October 5, 2025
As the Oklahoma weather begins to cool down, gardening activities may also start to slow down. Gardeners who aren’t quite ready to give up the taste of fresh-picked garden veggies can employ some practices to extend the growing season.
While it is handy to have a large greenhouse in the backyard, that isn’t the case for most gardeners. However, season-extending techniques provide a greenhouse effect that is beneficial for plant growth. Season extenders trap the sun’s heat to keep the plants and the soil warm and protect tender plants from frost, cold winds and snow.
Here are some ways gardeners can extend the season:
- Row covers and tunnels: A row cover is a lightweight fabric placed directly over the plants to protect them from the elements. Another option is to make low tunnels from wire hoops or curved PVC pipe and cover them with fabric or plastic. This will create a warmer environment that helps plants thrive longer.
- Cold frames and hoop houses: A cold frame is a structure that allows plants to be placed for temperature modification. This is a good option for semi-hardy plants. A hoop house is a version of a high tunnel and can support nearly year-round gardening with proper ventilation and irrigation. The use of cold frames can be extended by adding a heat source below the soil, such as electric heating cables or pipes carrying steam. Another heating option is composting organic material below the soil.
- Mulch: Mulch is more than a deterrent for weeds. Organic mulch, including hay, shredded bark or leaves, will help regulate soil temperature. This helps protect root crops like beets, turnips and carrots.
- Succession planting: Cool-season crops can be planted now for a late fall harvest. Choose crops that mature quickly, such as lettuce, kale, broccoli and radish.
Gardeners are familiar with drought conditions, and Oklahoma winters can be dry and windy. Proper watering and protection are key for season-extending gardening success. Drip irrigation is beneficial for reducing evaporation while maintaining consistent soil moisture.
With some planning, gardeners can enjoy fresh produce throughout the holiday season or even longer.
