• Josh Bushong, OSU Extension area agronomist for the West District, talks with SUNUP’s Kurtis Hair about how the drought is slowing the progress of planting dual-purpose wheat in Oklahoma. Josh also provides guidance on input costs and herbicide strategy to address weed pressure.
• In the Mesonet Weather Report, Gary McManus, state climatologist, says even though the heat wave has ended, drought is still in the picture and it’s worsening.
• Derrell Peel, OSU Extension livestock marketing specialist, discusses wheat pasture challenges and says cattle markets are bouncing back after a challenging summer.
• In Naturally Speaking, Mark Turner, OSU Extension wildlife specialist, teaches us all about acorns. Dr. Turner covers how oak tree species produce acorns, which acorns wildlife prefer and tree management advice to improve acorn production on your land.
• In Cow-Calf Corner, Mark Johnson, OSU Extension beef cattle breeding specialist, talks with John Weir, OSU Extension fire ecologist, about the difference between restorative burns and maintenance burns when planning and using prescribed fire to manage land.
• SUNUP attends the ExpOSUre - Livestock Docs event at the Oklahoma State Fair, a hands-on, interactive educational workshop for young people in elementary through high school interested in future careers in veterinary medicine.
• Interviews include Rosslyn Biggs, DVM, OSU Extension beef cattle specialist; Lisa Nicholson, OSU Extension 4-H educator in Mayes County; Kylee Deniz, Oklahoma Pork Council executive director; and a Mustang 4-H member aspiring to be a veterinarian.
• Collaborating organizations include: OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, OSU Extension, the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association, the Oklahoma Pork Council and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
• Another ExpOSUre - Livestock Docs workshop will be held at the Tulsa State Fair on Oct. 9 from noon to 2 p.m.
