Keep Garden Containers Thriving with Easy Drip Irrigation System

Tuesday, June 16, 2026

One of the great things about gardening is that it can be done in an expansive landscape or in just a few containers on the porch. Containers are a great introduction to gardening as an easy way to grow flowers and even some vegetables.

As any gardener knows, the heat of an Oklahoma summer can take its toll on plants. Something to keep in mind about container gardening is that the containers dry out quickly. This means more time watering … or does it?

A simple solution is to use an inexpensive drip irrigation system and an automatic control valve. These irrigation kits can be found at many home improvement stores, garden centers and nurseries. The kits include everything a gardener needs to install a drip system connected to an outside faucet. The typical kit will contain tubing, stakes with adjustable emitters, a backflow prevention device, t-connectors and fasteners to secure the tubing.

Installing the system is easy. The only tool needed is a pair of scissors or a sharp knife to cut the tubing to proper lengths.

To make the system more efficient, buy a programmable automatic control valve. This will allow gardeners to set the water to come on and off as needed and run as long as necessary, which is especially handy during a family vacation or business trip. Another positive aspect is that a drip irrigation system can conserve water by directing water into containers, reducing the risk of overspray associated with traditional sprinklers.

Drip irrigation systems can be adjusted so that emitters deliver varying amounts of water, depending on the plants’ moisture needs.

In addition, gardeners won’t have to spend time in the hot Oklahoma sun, ensuring their plants don’t wither from a lack of moisture. When faced with triple-digit heat, drip irrigation is a win-win for both gardeners and plants.

Be sure to purchase a Y-valve to connect to the faucet. This allows gardeners to attach the drip system controller and a garden hose for other purposes.

A drip irrigation system can be a game-changer, especially for beginning gardeners. Consistent soil moisture promotes healthy root development, which is essential for gardening success. Plus, it reduces the risk of disease since water is applied at the soil level rather than on the foliage. Leaves stay drier, which helps decrease the spread of fungal diseases and mildew.

Containers can add a lot of color and texture to a patio or porch, but they need consistent care. Using a drip irrigation system can help take the guesswork out of watering, especially for beginning gardeners. Whether they’re growing a few pots of herbs or a patio full of vegetables and flowers, investing in a drip irrigation system makes gardening easier, more efficient and enjoyable all season long.
