Cercis species, commonly called redbud, are found growing throughout North America, regions of Europe, and Asia. It is an attractive, small to medium, tree growing up to 20-30’, but it can sometimes grow as a multi-stemmed large shrub. Leaves are heart-shaped, young bark is gray which contrasts nicely with the bright magenta flowers that appear before the leaves in spring. Redbuds are often understory trees in wooded areas. It grows in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade, but it does best in part shade areas in our hot summers. The eastern redbud, Cercis canadensis, is the Oklahoma State tree. There are many cultivars to choose from, but Mexican redbud and the Chinese redbuds are also worthy small trees.
